Cork University Hospital
Cork University Hospital is changing its Out Patients’ appointment system in January 2010. From Monday 4th January 2010, all those attending the Out Patients Departments in the hospital will be seen in order of their appointment time and not on a ‘first come first served’ basis as was previously the case. The current system has resulted in large numbers of patients arriving early in the morning or afternoon, often hours before their appointment time, resulting in patients being in the clinic for up to 2 / 3 hours for a 10 – 15 minute consultation.
Patients are, therefore, advised not to arrive more than 15 minutes before their appointment time, as they will not be registered (checked in) on the appointment system.

Farm & Rural Stress Helpline:
2009 presented many challenges to those living in rural areas, both economically and with regard to the weather and this has seen an increase in the number of calls to HSE South’s Farm & Rural Stress Helpline. The helpline was initially targeted specifically at farmers and people who live in rural areas who may be feeling down, suffering from stress or depression or those who are concerned about someone. However the type of calls received in 2009 has changed. Previously, many callers cited loneliness, isolation and depression as key factors. These calls are still coming in but some callers are now also expressing concerns about the financial issues in relation to farming. Stress and anxiety are huge factors as many farmers have large loans taken out and are having huge difficulties getting grants and entitlements. Also, this time of the year can be a very sad time for people as they reflect on the past year and perhaps feel the loss of a loved one more at this time. We would urge people who are feeling stressed or lonely to call our helpline and talk to someone in complete confidence.
The HSE South’s Farm & Rural Stress Helpline - 1800 742 645 - is open daily from 6.00pm – 10.00pm and is staffed by professionals who offer callers a listening ear, support and advice.

After the Big Freeze ….
A message from Fr Cremin

This past Christmas and New Year will not be forgotten for a long time. Owing to the impossibility of travel, so many Masses were cancelled and so many other religious and secular occasions had to be abandoned. I was so disheartened to have to disappoint so many people.
My thanks to all who came to my help, to those who phoned neighbours alerting them to cancelled Masses, to those who passed on alerts from the parish Website, to those who stepped in with prayer services for the few who were able to get to church on Christmas morning, to those who advised me on weather conditions throughout the parish. Through it all, so many people have reminded me that we can thank God for bringing us through without loss of life.

... And to regular readers of our web-based Newsletter:
Great satisfaction and hilarity at stories of Kilmichael exiles in the other side of the world who kept an eye on the parish website and then rang home to tell their families what condition Kilmichael roads were in at the time.

Tirelton N.S.
Over the past fortnight both our 3rd class and 4th class indoor hurling teams have been taking part in their County Sciath na Scol qualifying tournaments. Incidentally Cloghduv was the venue for both sets of qualifiers. First out were the Third class lads who performed really well before going out at the semi-final stage on a 3-2 scoreline to Balnacarriga N.S. Next out were the 4th class lads. They defeated Kilbonnane and Derrinacahera before qualifying for the final against Ballinhassig. This proved a titanic struggle. It didn't look great for Tirelton at the interval when they trailed 2 goals to 1. However, in the second half they really upped their performance and fashioned a superb victory on a 3 -2 scoreline. This means qualification for the All-County Finals in Na Piarsaigh's Complex in early March. More than all this however was the fact that every boy in 2nd, 3rd and 4th classes played in the tournaments and this enthusiasm for the games made this victory so satisfying.

A weekend that will help deepen your commitment to one another, enrich the joys you share together, whether you are recently or many years married. Marriage Encounter, a worldwide Catholic voluntary organisation runs the Marriage Encounter weekend. Presented by three married couples and a priest, the weekend is a residential workshop that offers married couples with a good stable relationship the opportunity to explore, renew and enrich what they already have going for them in a way that completely respects their privacy. It is very much about the spouses being in a unique sacramental relationship that involves not only them but also God, their family and the wider community of the Church to which they belong. Priests and religious also make the weekend to grow and enrich their special relationship with their parishioners and the communities that they serve.

Cooldorrihy Grotto — Thanks
Last Sunday saw one of the happiest and joyful events in the story of Kilmichael parish with huge numbers turning out for the blessing of the renovated grotto in Cooldorrihy and the launching of ‘Kilmichael Through the Ages’, the first history of our parish. The organisers of both events are most grateful for the support and enthusiasm shown.
Among the omissions from the list of volunteers and contributors to Cooldorrihy Grotto, we would like to mention Denis Murphy, Carrigboy quarry, who donated two loads of stone.
