Statement from Pastoral Area meeting on Thurs 17th Feb.
"We are part of a Pastoral Area of 4 parishes -- Drimoleague, Dunmanway, Kilmichael and Iveleary.  This Pastoral Area consists of 10 churches with 5 priests at present.  To make sure that there would be a priest available to celebrate weekend Masses in each church it will be necessary to reduce the number of Masses from 14 at present to 11.
The new schedule of weekend Masses will mean there will be only one weekend Mass in each church in the Pastoral Area, except for Dunmanway town, where there will be two.
To enable these Masses to be shared  by the available priests the existing Mass times will have to be revised.
All Pastoral Areas of the Diocese are having similar discussions."

General Election
A MATTER OF LIFE OR DEATH

For Catholics, the most urgent factor in next Friday’s General Election should not be the economy or the personalities of the candidates but the certainty that the next parliament will be legislating on the availability of abortion in Ireland. We might think that jobs, taxes, health are more important but we can always undo bad legislation later on — we can’t bring dead babies back to life.

A European Court of Human Rights ruling last December did not oblige Ireland to introduce legislation authorising abortion. The European court ruled that Ireland has failed to properly implement the constitutional right to abortion where a woman is entitled to one where her life is at risk. This leaves future policy in Ireland on protecting the lives of unborn children in the hands of the Irish people and does not oblige Ireland to introduce legislation authorising abortion.
The suggestion that because of this country’s pro-life ethos pregnant women are denied necessary medical treatments is simply not true. A pregnant woman will never be denied necessary medical treatment, even if that may result in the unintentional loss of the unborn baby.
The Medical Council, which governs the practice of medicine in Ireland, has never said or accepted any suggestion that abortion is ever necessary to save a mother’s life.
The X case, which decided abortion was lawful where there is a threat to the life of a mother (including by her threat of suicide) was decided without the benefit of any medical evidence. The Supreme Court’s decision in the X case ignores, and is actually contrary to, the medical evidence.
As a human being you have the obligation to ensure that you don’t vote for any candidate or party which does not unequivocally oppose every effort to legalise the taking of a life. Examine every party and every candidate on this question. Pro-Life Campaign is to question all candidates in this regard. Look out for their responses in the media on Tuesday or make it your business to investigate for yourself. If you find a party or candidate which opposes abortion, even if the slaughter begins you’ll have done all you can to prevent it by casting your vote. If no candidate opposes abortion, you must either withhold your vote or accept responsibility for the future massacre.
Thank you — Fr Cremin PP

Kilmichael Historical Society has been in existence for about twenty years and in that time it has worked quietly and efficiently and has completed some notable projects. A community employment scheme was established for Moneycusker Cemetery. Vegetation was cut back, walls replaced, shrubs planted and headstones rediscovered. Plaques were erected and famine victims remembered. This work continues to this day.
St. Michael's Well was restored and  29th September (Michaelmas) is still commemorated in the parish. Plaques were also erected at various other areas in the parish. The work is still ongoing in a bid to have Macloneigh Cemetery properly preserved by Cork County Council.
Society members organise the annual cemetery mass which alternates between the three cemeteries in the parish and which will be held in Terelton this year.
2010 was a very important year for the society as its long awaited history of the parish was published. It has been a huge success and work has already started on Volume 2.  Society members are also planning a series of heritage walks in the parish. They hope to have the first routes up and running this year.
Kilmichael Historical Society will hold their AGM on Thursday 3rd March at 8.30 pm in Dromleigh N.S. New members are most welcome.

MESSAGE FROM BISHOPS ON PUBLICATION OF PASTORAL RESPONSE ‘TOWARDS HEALING AND RENEWAL’
The first anniversary of the publication of the Pastoral Letter of Pope Benedict XVI to the Catholics of Ireland occurs on 19 March 2011.  To mark this anniversary Irish bishops wish to bring the following three important initiatives to the attention of the faithful: the publication of their pastoral response Towards Healing and Renewal; the new Catholic counselling and support service for survivors of abuse; and, the progress of listening and consultation exercises which have been taking place.
To mark this first anniversary bishops have published the pastoral response Towards Healing and Renewal.  This outlines different undertakings that the bishops are making on the journey emphasised by the survivors of abuse.  These steps include: Prayer for the Survivors of Abuse, including a commitment on the part of bishops to dedicate each First Friday to prayer and fasting in reparation for abuse and the failure to address it adequately; a commitment to listening with sensitivity and care to the experiences of those who suffered abuse; spiritual support to survivors of abuse who wish to avail themselves of it, including the opportunity for spiritual direction; ongoing commitment to creating a safer future for children in the Church in accordance with Safeguarding Children; a review of Dioceses, Religious Congregations and Societies by the National Board for Safeguarding Children; and ongoing financial support for the work of safeguarding and care.  Towards Healing and Renewal also includes ways in which parish communities can play their part in assisting the process of healing for survivors of abuse.
In February 2011, bishops, the Conference of Religious of Ireland and the Irish Missionary Union have launched a new Catholic counselling and support service.  This counselling service, which continues the important work of Faoiseamh, supports survivors of abuse in a professional and caring environment by providing a wide range of services, including Helpline and face-to-face Counselling.  Healing Meetings, Group Work, Practical Workshops and a Social Worker/Bridging service designed to link survivors of abuse to other services relevant to their needs, such as the health, local authority, educational and social welfare services.
Over the last year, and prompted by Pope Benedict’s Pastoral Letter, listening and consultation exercises have been taking place in dioceses.  These are continuing and are an important step on the journey of healing and renewal for the Church in Ireland.

Ordination

Rev Michael Anthony Buckley, Deacon, Toames East, will be ordained to the priesthood for the Dioceses of Cork & Ross by Bishop John Buckley on Sat week, June 4th, at 12.00 noon in St Finbarr's Church, Toames. This is a historic occasion, being the first ever ordination in the history of the parish. All Kilmichael people, at home and away, are joyful and excited about this event as they pray for Anthony.

Despite somewhat restricted space in the church and in car-parking locations for an occasion like this, we welcome everybody to the ceremony. There will be a luxury marquee with live TV and seating for 200 people to deal with any overflow in the church. We will have a large army of ushers, traffic-controllers and parking assistants, drawn mostly from the members of Kilmichael GAA Club. If there is a very large turnout, there are bound to be some difficulties and inconveniences for individuals but we are doing everything we can to ensure that these are minimised.

Anthony will be celebating a First Mass of Thanksgiving on the following evening, Sunday 5th June, Feast of the Ascension, at 7.00 pm in Toames. We aim to have as few restrictions as possible for that occasioin, to encourage people to come. We look forward to meeting you afterwards in the marqee to partake of light refreshments.
Anthony will be celebrating Mass for the first time in Cooldorihy church on the next day, Mon 6th June, at 8.00 pm and in Johnstown on Tue 7th June at 8.00 pm.

Anthony

Fr Cremin writes:

On behalf of the parishioners of Kilmichael, at home and away, it gives me great joy to offer my congratulations and best wishes to Fr. Anthony and to welcome him into the Priesthood of the Dioceses of Cork & Ross. Kilmichael’s list of vocations to the priesthood and religious life must be unsurpassed by any parish of its population. Among Kilmichael’s native priests in the past were three brothers of Anthony’s paternal grandmother — Frs. Michael, Con and Peter Lucey from Moneycusker. Two of Anthony’s aunts are members of the Daughters of Charity, Sr Catherine and Sr Marguerite Buckley from Mountmusic. I’m privileged to count myself among his family members but can’t number myself among Kilmichael’s native priests!
Kilmichael Parish is proud of Anthony. With his devotion to Eucharistic Adoration, his love of prayer and his interest in and compassion for all, particularly the old and the infirm, he is a valuable and much-needed addition to the clergy of these Dioceses
Frs Lucey
Anthony's three granduncles:
L. to R. Fr Peter Lucey, (died in 1983 while curate in Kilmurry); Fr Michael Lucey (died 1993 after retiring as Parish Priest of Innishannon), Fr Con Lucey (died 1969 while serving as curate in Kealkil, Bantry parish)

Tirelton National School
Fortune did not favour the boys and girls of the schools hurling team in their recent Sciath na Scol hurling final in Páirc Ui Chaoimh. The opponents, Castlemartyr NS were just too big and too good on the day. As always, the team played with great spirit, courage and skill and kept fighting until the final whistle. However, some days you just have to accept your opponents are better and congratulate them while still remaining proud of your own achievements. The great thing was, every member of the panel got to actually play in the match and hopefully some of them will return to play in this famous stadium again before too long. The support and sense of community generated by the occasion was truly brilliant and the only place the school lost was on the scoreboard. Everywhere else was a win. The panel was: Andrew and Brendan Kelleher, Ronan and Eoghan Murphy, Kevin Kelleher, Cathal O’Donovan, James Pettersen, Saoirse O’Mahony, Tim Slattery, Donard Calnan (Terelton); John and Tom Downey (Boulbrack); Cathal (C) and Aoife Foley, Adam O’Leary (Rosnakilla); Conor Kelly (Greenville); Shelly Tobin, Alan McCarthy, (Knockane); Jack Moloney (Ardnaneen); Seán Buttimer, (Toames East); Aidan Murray (Ballina).

Mini Marathon
Sinéad O'Callaghan writes:
The 2011 " Evening Echo Womens Mini Marathon" will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 25, 2011. I am planning on getting a group of ladies together to take part and donate the proceeds to "Suicide Aware", a Cork based Voluntary Organisation set up to help deal with the issues of depression and suicide in Ireland.
The race will start at 1 p.m. from the City end of Centre Park Road, and will cover a four-mile course taking in Centre Park Road, The Marina, Blackrock Village, Ballintemple, Monahan Road and will finish in Kennedy Park. (It's very easy, everyone goes at their own pace!)
An estimated 11,000 ladies are expected to particpate in what has become the biggest ladies event outside of Dublin. I did it myself last year & it was great fun, so I hope that all of you will come along & support a worthy cause! I know it is an issue close to a lot of our hearts, which is the main reason I am organising it, in memory of the friends & family we have lost from Suicide! Its much more about the public awareness than about how much money is raised at the event.

Let the Healing Begin
An Evening of Healing for all who have been wounded by the reality of abuse. Sunday, 16 October 2011 at 3.00 pm SMA Hall, Wilton, Cork.
Those who have been affected by sexual or other abuse, in all its manifestations, within the family, in institutions, in the church or in any other setting as well as their families, their carers and supporters are welcome to attend. The evening is carefully designed and focused so as to respond to the need for healing and renewal. It includes appropriate chant, singing, music, dance, readings, ceremonial and symbolism. It is structured so that those who participate will leave with a sense of hope in their own worth as individuals and as valued members of the community.

Notice for Parish Newsletters concerning a second quarterly collection.
Over the last number of years, the Diocese of Cork and Ross has undertaken a number of initiatives that are of support to individual parishes. Foremost amongst these are various initiatives in the area of child protection training for representatives of each parish. However, other pastoral services are also provided; the Diocesan Education Office provides advice and support to the parish primary schools of the diocese which number over one hundred and eighty and, in recent times, much resources in terms of time, personnel and finance have been spent in the area of Pastoral Development and the involvement of laity in their parishes.
Unfortunately, these initiatives, as well as being pastorally necessary, come at a cost. The Diocese is funded by a 10% levy on parish collections. In recent times, with collections falling, this income from this levy has also fallen. The Central Fund of the Diocese is currently operating at an annual deficit of over €300,000.
Like any good housekeeper, the diocese has examined its outlays and reduced its costs where it can. However, some costs are necessary and over the past few years, the Diocese has operated at a loss. That situation cannot continue. It is essential to plan for the future and, when outlays exceed income, outlays must be reduced or income increased. We cannot reduce outlays any further without compromising the Pastoral role of the Diocese. To that end, we must look at income. From a review of other dioceses, this Diocese claims the smallest percentage of parish income. Parishes too have expenses and many parishes have undertaken necessary refurbishment and development work. The Diocese, in no way, wishes to encroach on these initiatives and on their funding.
To that end, discussions were held with the Diocesan Finance Committee and with clergy and chairpersons of Parish Finance Committees in July. The general consensus was that a second collection quarterly, to support the Diocesan Office and Diocesan initiatives was the best way forward. That situation also obtains in many other Dioceses. I have taken that advice and from October 2011, a quarterly special collection will introduced.
I know that many families and parishes are feeling the pressure of these times. In introducing this collection, I am very mindful of that context and I assure you that costs are being kept to a minimum. However, best practice and current realities dictate that we must focus on areas of need without losing sight of the pastoral and evangelical mission of the local church. These, unfortunately involve a cost. I would also assure you that compensation for victims of clerical child abuse is not part of this fund and this collection is not and will not be used for that purpose.

CHRISTMAS WISHES
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Website visitors a Happy and Holy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. I have received many very welcome messages of encouragement from you during the year. I know that more and more Kilmichael people, far and near, are discovering and being informed by this site and by the other two Kilmichael sites,
Kilmichael GAA, authored by Eileen Cotter and Western Gaels Underage GAA, authored by Denis and Sinéad O'Callaghan. As far as this Parish site is concerned, I greatly enjoy updating it and knowing that it is being found useful by so many people. May God bless you all.
Fr Jerry
