Save Our Small Schools
Small rural schools, like those in our parish, were dealt a devastating blow in the budget. The pupil-teacher ratio in 2, 3 and 4 teacher schools will be raised considerably over the next few years. This will mean a loss of teachers and, therefore, larger class sizes in multiclass settings.
The closure of small rural schools has certainly affected the parish of Kilmichael and, therefore, we need to fight to ensure we retain the modern schools with up-to-date facilities we have. Life in rural Ireland is under threat. Our schools are the heartbeat of our community. It’s what binds us together and gives us our unique identity. Our schools are where our children learn first-hand about community and citizenship.
A 'Save Our Small Schools' campaign has been set up in West Cork. A public meeting will be held in the Parkway Hotel, Dunmanway on Monday January 16th at 7.30 pm. We need the community to come out in force at this meeting to forcibly demonstrate the importance of this issue. We are urging all parents, future parents and any other interested parties to come along. A strong and unified show of solidarity is essential to ensure our voices are heard. This could be our last chance to make an effective stance against these measures.

Tir Na nOg parent and toddler group
will meet Fri 27th Jan 10am-12pm in Kilmichael Parish Resource Centre for LAST ever meeting. This group has been going for almost four years now but, due to lack of interest in the formation of a new committee, we feel it is time to call it a day. It is sad, but just knowing that so many have benefited from this voluntary group is fantastic. So thanks to all who came and joined in to make Friday mornings so much fun for parents and toddlers alike.
Perhaps down the line another bunch of energetic parents will start a new group.

Kilmichael ICA will meet on Thur 26th Jan at 8.30pm in Kilmichael Parish Resource Centre for a night of knitting. So why not come along bring your needles and wool, if you have any? If not, just bring yourself; the more the merrier. This is our first meeting of 2012.

Tirelton NS.
The boys from 2nd, 3rd, and 4th classes have been training very hard since Christmas in preparation for their annual Sciath na Scol indoor hurling competitions. First up was the third class competition, held in Bishopstown, and involved schools from Ballincollig, Glasheen, Bishopstown and ourselves. These were schools with very big numbers but, as always, Tirelton more than matched them. The competition was held on a non-competitive basis and everyone certainly enjoyed the day out. The Fourth Class tournament was held in Cloghduv last Wednesday. Donoghmore, Firmount, Kilbonnane and Ballinhassig provided the opposition. After a two frenetic hours of hurling it came down to a final between Tirelton and Ballinhassig with Tirelton just being edged out by a last minute goal. However once again the boys enjoyed the day out and really played well. Two great things about these competitions was every boy in the three classes played and some girls from 3rd and 4th classes also trained with the squad. Next year we are hoping that we will have enough girls to enter the 5th class girl’s competition, which would be another first. All at the school would like to wish the Kilmichael hurling team the best of luck in the Munster JHC semi-final on Sunday.

Grandparents' Day at Dromleigh
The pupils and staff of Dromleigh N.S would like the thank all grandparents and their friends who attended the first Grandparents' Day at the school. The day was a huge success, with large numbers attending. We know that the visitors also enjoyed the visit. All pupils got into the spirit of the occasion beforehand. The older children composed poems in honour of their grandparents and the younger children did pictures. These were all displayed on the day. The senior classes baked scones and many children also volunteered to bring some baking. The pupils helped out on the day, making sure all were made to feel welcome and showing them around the school. The day finished with reminiscences from the grandparents and entertainment from the children. It was a wonderful experience for all and one we hope to repeat in the future.

Tea Dance
The organisers would like to thank all those who gave such wonderful support to the Tea Dance on Wed night last and to those who donated raffle prizes and well as to all those who worked so hard on the project. The night made a profit of €4,588 for Macroom Hospital Upgrading.

If your child is interested in attending this Summer Camp please call the centre to register your interest and keep an eye in local publications.   There will be an enrolment day in June. Digital Television - Don't get Left Behind!
Your television may not receive a signal after 24th October, when the old network is turned off.
It’s easy to check whether you need to do something.
If you get your TV through a Pay-TV provider, like Sky or UPC, you’re ok!
If you get your TV through an aerial, you need to do one of the following:
1. Get SAORVIEW: you can either get a SAORVIEW-approved set-top box, (about €70+, or get a SAORVIEW-approved new TV, (about €130+). You can install it yourself, or get a friend or TV installer to help. You still need your aerial: very few people need to get a new one.
In some cases the aerial may need adjusting, and a local TV installer can do this work for you.
or
2. Get Pay-TV with a monthly bill (approximately €25 per month) from a provider such as Sky, UPC, etc.
Community and Voluntary organisations in your area are involved in reaching people who may get left behind and assisting them to make the switch to digital TV before 24th October this year.
If you know someone who you think could do with some help, Please:
• Ask them if they’ve made the switch, and if not
• Sit down with them and give them the basic information above,
• Ask them if they would like some further help.
A ‘Digital Switchover Champion’ is coordinating efforts in your area.

Please contact Patricia Bevan on 02752266 or patricia@wcdp.ie if you would like to get involved or have any questions.

Hi all
Looking ahead to our parish calendar for 2014, yes you saw right 2014! I want to get a selection of photos from 2013 for the calendar starting from now on the theme of the ‘Seasons of the Year’. The photos can be of anything to do with the seasons, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter of scenes around Kilmichael area - wildlife scenes, harvesting scenes or anything that catches your eye. I will submit all entries to a panel of judges and they will decide which ones will be put on the calendar. So get snappy from now on. This is open to all ages.
Fr. Pat.
PS. It might even be possible to make a competition out of the photos for the calendar.

Terelton National School celebrates 125th anniversary
Last Thursday night was an historic one in the life of Tirelton National School as the school community, both past and present celebrated 125 years in existence. An enormous crowd gathered for the ceremony and after the Mass there was time to talk and reminisce about the school’s development down through the years. There was a great display of photographs, memorabilia and roll books while former Principal, Daithi McSweeney recalled his time in Terelton in the early 1960’s and was glad to note how things had improved from his time. A great night was had by all and it was a fitting way to mark such an event. Roll on the next 125!

Dromleigh N.S.
The Green Schools Committee of Dromleigh N.S. has been very busy of late putting together their application for a Green Flag for the school. They initiated a number of recycling projects. These included the collecting of mobile phones, batteries, egg cartons, bottle tops, stamps and used clothing. Uses were found for all of these. Waste was reduced considerably at the school and paper was shredded and found a new use as bedding for animals. With the help of local businesses, a 'little pig composter' was purchased and has been a great success. Following a recent visit from the County Council Assessor, the school has been told it has been recommended for a Green Flag. This is a great source of pride for the pupils, staff and parents of the school.
The Dromleigh team of Kieran and Gerard Murphy, Nicky John Dromey and Caolán Murphy won the annual Macroom Library Quiz recently. With sixteen other teams taking part, competition was fierce but after a tie-breaker Dromleigh beat off a challenge from Clondrohid to emerge the overall winners.
Anna Callanan from Toames emerged as winner of her section of the Macroom Credit Union Poster Competition. Her entry then went on to the next stage and she came third this time. She was presented with her prizes in Macroom this week. Congratulations to all the winners.

Christmas Message from Fr. Pat
On this the 4th Sunday of Advent with Christmas Day almost upon us, I want to thank you all for the welcome to me since I came among you five month ago. The last months have been interesting and exciting, taking on new responsibilities in a large rural parish. I want to extend a word of thanks to all who work with me here in the parish, the altar servers and sacristans of our three churches, those who do the flowers and general maintenance around the place. To the collectors and Legion of Mary; to the choirs of Toames and Johnstown and to Ministers of Word and Ministers of Eucharist and all who have helped me. I also want to thank my friend and colleague, Fr. Martin O’Driscoll; to Johnny O’Leary who guided me to the First Friday calls. A special word of thanks to our parish secretary, Eileen Cotter for her tireless help. To our schools and the valuable work they do. I congratulate once again those who erected the Crib at Cooldorrihy and to all who have helped in anyway since I came among you. I want to wish you all the greetings of the Season of Christ the newborn babe and a prosperous New Year. Fr. Pat.
