Hello everyone,
Happy new year to you all. Thank you to all who helped make 2014 a good year and I look forward to a good one in 2015. Best wishes to everyone in the parish. Thanks to all who have taken the envelope boxes for the year ahead. If anyone did not get their envelope box for the year, please contact me or Eileen we will get a box to you. These envelope boxes keep the parish finances in good order. I will shortly be sending of the accounts to the accountant and I will publish the accounts in due course. Thanks to all who continue to come to Mass and services of various sorts during the year. If anyone has any ideas for Open Air Masses during the year ahead, I’d love to hear from you. We may well be celebrating more in a famine graveyard in the parish. More about that in due course.
For now I wish you all God’s blessings for the year ahead.
Kindest regards, Fr. Pat.

SHEP 40th Anniversary Conference We would like to let you know that it is still possible to book a place at the SHEP 40th Anniversary Conference which will be taking place on Wednesday 28th January in the Nemo Rangers Conference Centre, off South Douglas Road, Cork. The theme of the conference is “Finding Our Collective Compass – Learning from Experience at the Personal, Family, Community and Global Levels.”
At this beginning of a new year, the conference offers an opportunity to reflect together on ways forward for us all. It promises to be a very engaging, stimulating day, a day for recharging our batteries, for helping us to see things afresh, for generating hope and confidence and a sense of shared purpose in all who care about our world.
We have great keynote speakers – Colm O’Connor, Pat Corbett, Paul Doherty and Donal Dorr. All of them have been involved in creative and transformative work over many years, and are leading thinker/practitioners in their fields. In addition, participants will be able to learn about a number of groups or initiatives which may provide us with hopeful pointers for our collective compass. Dr. Margaret O’Keeffe will be in the chair, and Fr. Donal Linehan will give the opening address. As well as being a founder member of SHEP, Donal has contributed hugely to the human and social justice infrastructure of Cork in many different ways. The full programme for the day is attached for your information.
Many people have already signed up to attend, but we are still taking bookings, as the Nemo Rangers conference centre can hold a big crowd! There is no charge to attend the conference, but advance booking is essential. Don’t delay in booking your place – just email or ring SHEP.

Hi all,
The subject of Depression was covered very well in a piece on ‘Ear to the Ground’ last Tuesday night on RTE 1. For anyone that is interested, it can be viewed on the RTE player. Depression is a very difficult subject to deal with and I congratulate the Ear to the Ground team on their sensitive approach to it and the farmer and his family featured on the programme. Pat.

Government axes Accord funding ahead of marriage referendum
Bishop questions whether funding withdrawal is part of wider policy. With just over a week to the marriage referendum, the Government has withdrawn all funding for pre-marriage courses from the Catholic agency Accord, The Irish Catholic can reveal. In a letter obtained by The Irish Catholic from Tusla, the child and family agency, Accord is informed that total annual funding of €378,000 has been withdrawn completely.
It will give weight to fears that have been raised by Church leaders that Catholic agencies who do not support the Government’s agenda on the redefinition of marriage will be starved of funding.
Speaking to The Irish Catholic Bishop of Elphin Dr Kevin Doran questioned whether the axing of the funding is “part of a wider policy of the Government” to withdraw funding from Catholic agencies.
The revelation is also set to increase fears in the ‘yes’ camp ahead of the referendum since voters have already been raising the issue of Accord funding with politicians. Fianna Fáil TD Colm Keaveney – a prominent ‘yes’ campaigner – admitted on social media that “this issue has become prominent on the door”.
Bizarrely, the letter informs Accord that the decision to cut funding is retrospective and took effect on January 1, despite the fact that the letter is dated May 7.
Tusla cites a delay in Minister James Reilly approving the budget for the fact that the cut is retrospective. The Irish Catholic understands that Accord had no idea the annual grant would be slashed and therefore has been operating since January 1 on the basis that funding would continue. Accord is now in a precarious financial situation since it has incurred considerable expense in the first five months of the year based on the expectation of continued funding from Tusla.Bishop Doran told The Irish Catholic “it seems to me that if the State does have a commitment to marriage, as the Constitution requires it to do, it is a rather strange move to be withdrawing funding from pre-marriage preparation courses”.
“It remains to be seen whether this is part of a wider policy of the Government,” Bishop Doran said. Dr Doran added: “we did express concern in a pastoral statement in March that this could happen and certainly some of the comments coming from the Taoiseach would indicate that he would expect Catholic schools to change what they teach in relation to marriage and the family.“I also think back to two years ago when the then Minister for Health [James Reilly] threatened to remove funding from Catholic hospitals if they didn’t conform to the law on abortion. It is now the same minister who is responsible for Tusla,” Bishop Doran said.

Terelton Cemetery
Hi all,
As you know much work has been done by the Terelton Cemetery Committee and more needs to be done. The statue of the Sacred Heart has been taken down and professionally repainted. This will shortly by reinstated it its new plinth. The pathways in the older part of the cemetery need to be tidied up and we plan to put down a porus membrane on the pathways and fill then with gravel. We would plan to do this on next Friday, 26th June. We need help for this job and we plan to be there from 1.30 pm until late to complete the job, so help is needed. We need people to give us help to carry the gravel onto the pathways with wheelbarrows, buckets and shovels. If you have time to spare anytime on Friday, 26th, help would be gratefully appreciated; bring buckets, wheelbarrows and shoves. Everyone of all ages are welcome.
Fr. Pat on behalf of the Terelton Cemetery Committee.

Last Thursday, past-pupils and current Cork Senior footballers, Vera Foley and Peter Kelleher jointly raised the Active School Flag. The whole process of acquiring the flag was expertly guided throughout the past year by Ms.O'Riordan. It was lovely to welcome lots of parents, grandparents, past-pupils and friends for such an occasion. Indeed, the Zumba flashmob proved a great 'hit' with many of the visitors joining in. Check out www.tireltonns.ie for pictures of the day.

It’s that time of year again here in SHEP where we are busy promoting our upcoming Personal Development Course which is due to start in September of this year. As you may already know this is a yearlong course (one night a week), with seven weekend days also included. The focus is on helping people to grow in self-awareness and on giving people an opportunity to explore their lives, relationships and responsibilities in a supportive and friendly environment. The course which is experiential in nature, is non-academic and people of all ages and walks of life are welcomed. The only requirement is a willingness to be personally involved and to interact with others. Feedback on this course has been consistently very high with very many of the participants reporting it as being “life changing” information can be found on our website (www.socialandhealth.com). We would also be delighted to talk to anyone who might just like a chat about what is required so do please encourage people to give us a call on 021 4666180. We can email or post out some more packs to you if you would like them.

Cinema Night for The Hope Foundation
A charity film screening of “The Impossible” will take place on Sunday 4th October at 7.00pm at Briery Gap Cinema, Macroom. “The Impossible” tells the story of close-knit family Maria (Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three sons as they begin their winter vacation in Thailand in December 2004, but the day after Christmas, the idyllic holiday turns into an incomprehensible nightmare when a terrifying roar rises from the depths of the sea, followed by a wall of black water that devours everything in its path. Though Maria and her family face their darkest hour, unexpected displays of kindness and courage ameliorate their terror (Cert 12A).
The event is being organised by a local St. Mary’s Secondary School Student. Proceeds raised on the night will be donated to The Hope Foundation, Cork who work to save the street and slum children of Kolkata (Calcutta) from lives of pain, abuse, poverty and darkness. Admission is €10. All support would be very much appreciated! For more information, contact Briery Gap on 026-41793.
