Johnstown says No to Turbines!
Planning guidelines regarding the setback distances and noise limitations of wind farms were calculated on the total height of the 1st generation of turbines (30-50m). The heights of those planned for near Johnstown and Inchigeelagh are of another scale (130-150m). Industrially sized wind turbines sited according to these outdated guidelines represent a real risk to public health and wellbeing. It is unacceptable that planning permissions continue to be sought and granted based on them!

Mega wind farm in West Cork - When is enough, enough?
There are, at last count, 224 turbines in a 20km radius of Johnstown village in Kilmichael, either built or with permissions applied for. In the words of the Cork County Council Inspector, for some people it won’t be a question of looking out on a wind farm but of actually living in one! The Shehy More, Carrigarierk and Barnadivane wind farms are individual stages of a connected project, applied for by multiple subsidiaries of the same company. Developers are not disclosing the full extent of their plans; instead, they routinely look to have decisions of local planning authorities overruled. If the rights of rural communities are not protected, then we will only discover when the limit for developments has been reached when it is far too late.
Please show your support and look out for upcoming fundraising events. You can also find Johnstown Wind Action on facebook.com or ifundraise.ie. If you wish to join our mailing list, write to jtwindaction@gmail.com

Facebook and Twitter !!!!!!!!
SIR: I haven’t got a computer but I was told about Facebook and Twitter and am trying to make friends outside Facebook and Twitter while applying the same principles.
Every day I walk down the street and tell passers by what I have eaten, how I feel, what I will do for the rest of the day. I give them pictures of my wife, my daughter, my dog and my gardening and on holiday, spending time by the pool. I also listen to their conversations, tell them I ‘like’ them and give them my opinion on every subject that interests me… whether it interests them or not.
And it works, I already have four people following me; two police officers, a social worker and a psychiatrist.

There will be a free Composting workshop in the Dunmanway Community Garden from 12 – 1 on Thursday 4th May. Donal will talk through how to make, maintain and use the composting systems on demonstration which will include ‘Big-Pig’, wormery, compost heaps and Bokashi.

Climb for Charity
I’d like to say a big Thank You to all those of you who donated to my recent climb of Carrauntoohill for Macaroom and Dunmanway hospitals, a total of €2,664 was raised. And cheques of €1,332 were presented to both hospitals last week. Macaroon hospital will use the money to buy a coal effect fireplace to make their day room more homely for their residents, Dunmanway will use the money to buy pressure relieving cushions and high support chairs for their residents. The climb itself took place on the 20th May, I was joined by 3 family members and a friend. Weather was not the best at the summit, it was a challenge, and a very enjoyable one, Photos of both the climb and presentation of cheques can be seen on my Facebook page. On behalf of both hospitals thanks again. Pat Crowley

Reflection on Grief by John O’Donoghue
Though the silent weeping of your heart lessens, you get on, more or less, with your life; a place is kept within you for the one who is gone. No other will ever by given the key to that door. As the years go on you may not remember the departed every day with your conscious mind. Yet below your surface mind, some part of you is always in their presence.

From their side, our friends in the unseen world are always secretly embracing us in their new and bright belongings. Though we may forget them, they can never forget us; their secret embrace unknowingly shelters and minds us.

The bright moment in grief is when the sore absence gradually changes into a well of presence. You become aware of the subtle companionship of the departed one. You know that when you are in trouble, you can turn to this presence beside you and draw on it for encouragement and blessing.

The departed is now no longer restricted to any one place and can be with you any place you are. It is good to know the blessings of this presence.

Parish Accounts - extra statements available.
Hi All,
Last weekend, I published the parish accounts for 2016 and gave a verbal account of my own salary for 2016. As you can see we finished the year with an operating profit of €1,590 which is a fairly tight margin. I can account for every cent I spend of parish funds and do my best to get the best value for money.
I also spoke about St. Enda’s church, Johnstown and the fact that we will be celebrating 21 years since it was renovated and that we will have to do some essential maintenance work which includes replacing and repairing the glass in the roof over the altar, expected costs coming in about €2,000. The external walls and power-washing, sealing and painting. The most attractive quote from Carbery Spray painting coming in at €4,314 giving us a need for extra funds of about €6,500. While we can cover some of these works we do no have enough money to cover all. Accordingly and very reluctantly I am asking if you can, to put a little extra in the collection at weekends to cover these costs.
I will, as always, keep you up to date with progress. I will repeat this message again in September for those that are on holidays.
Thanking you, Pat.

Hi All,
Last Monday night I was invited to a meeting of the Kilmichael Parish branch of the Legion of Mary. At the meeting it was decided with great reluctance to close the presidium down with immediate effect. The existing members were there since the presidium opened in 1986 and had met every Monday night with the past thirty one years. They felt that as there was no one coming in to replace them they could no longer continue. They felt that they had done their fair share. Every week they met, reflected on the life of our Blessed Virgin Mary and the readings for the following Sunday. They voluntarily counted the parish offertory collections and banked it in AIB, Macroom every week with the last thirty one years, a job that they did diligently and with great care. When I informed the bank that they would no longer be doing it, the staff told me that they were never out a cent. They also sold the Irish Catholic Newspaper every week of the year.
I wish to thank them on behalf of the parish for their huge contribution to the parish over the past thirty one years and wish them well n their retirement. Their hard work will be missed.
Regards, Pat.
