Kilmichael Historical Society
The movie "The Lord's Burning Rain" will be shown at the club rooms, Annahala on Friday 21st February at 7.30 pm. This is a new film by Maurice O'Callaghan.
It is set in the 1960s and during the War of Independence of the 1920s and was filmed on location in Kilmichael, Inchigeela and Dunmanway. Jon Kenny is narrator and the cast includes Caroline Morahan and Jonathan Ryan. This film has already been shown at the Cork Film Festival to very good reviews. This is its first showing outside of Cork City and is an opportunity not to be missed. There will also be a raffle with first prize being a €150 voucher from the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney. Tickets are €8 and are available from society members.

Kilmichael and Daniel O’Connell
The Great Famine of the 1840s hit Kilmichael hard. However, the parish had a very hard-working Poor Relief Committee headed up by such people as Fr. James O’Driscoll PP, his nephew Fr.James O’Driscoll CC and John Edward Barrett of Carrigboy Castle. They wrote appealing for funds to the Relief Committee in Dublin and constantly kept Kilmichael in the public eye by writing to the newspapers.
On November 16th 1846, they succeeded in getting Daniel O’Connell to write to Dublin on their behalf. The following is the text of his letter.
I beg leave to enclose to you the letter to me from the Poor Relief Committee of the United Parishes of Kilmichael and Macloneigh. I know that a repetition of tales of distress palls on the mind and checks the vivacity of attention. I venture particularly to press upon your attention this especial case of a district in which there is neither town nor village to afford any scope for the application of the principles of political economy. There must be, unless the people are sacrificed a direct application of public funds by the Government – of funds applicable in the manner suggested.
On behalf, therefore of a most wretched portion of my constituents, I beg leave earnestly to press their claim on your kind consideration. I have the honor to be, with the greatest respect, Your obedient servant, Daniel O’Connell.
The letter was answered some days later with a grant of £200 for Kilmichael Poor Relief Committee.

Kilmichael Parish Church

The old cemetery at Moneycusker contains the ruins of a Protestant Church at the site. A report on the ruined churches of the Diocese of Cork published in 1911 tells us that this church was still standing at that time. It had not been used for three years and had begun to fall into decay. It was a rectangular building with a small porch on the west end. There were three Gothic windows with diamond panes on each of the side walls and one on the east wall. The door was on the north side of the porch. The inside was fully furnished but was in disorder. The church was thought to have been built between 1700 and 1728 on the recommendation of Bishop Downes. Today all that remains of the church are the remains of some of the walls and a part of one of the diamond paned windows.

Kilmichael in the 1600s
Cormac Oge Mac Carthy received a grant of land of land in Co. Cork from King James 1of England at Christmas 1619. Part of this grant included “Iffanloe” which corresponds with modern day Kilmichael. He was already known as the 17th Lord of Muskerry and this helped to strengthen his position. This chieftain was Oxford educated. Later he received the titles of Lord Mac Carthy, Baron of Blarney and Viscount Mac Carthy of Muskerry. When he died in 1640 he was buried in Westminister Abbey, London.
Iffanloe (Kilmichael) had been given to Sir William Taaffe in 1605. He got the lands which were the ancestral territory of the O’Mahonys and in particular Donál Mac Conogher O’Mahony who had been arrested for treason. Sir William Taaffe was unlikely ever to have visited his estates and it is thought he made a deal with the Mac Carthys. Kilmichael changed hands several more times before it came into the ownership of individual families as it is today. Kilmichael Historical Society.

Church Gate Collections
Hi all,
Following a vote taken at all Masses in Kilmichael parish on the weekend of 22nd/23rd February, 2014, 81% of the mass-goers voted against the holding of church gate collections.
A total of 304 votes were cast. 58 voted in favour of retaining church gate collections. 246 voted against the holding of church gate collections at our churches. All votes were counted after each Mass. While this may not stop people holding church gate collections in our parish, I would hope the wishes of the people who come to Mass will be respected. I want to thank all who participated in the vote. Thanking you, Pat.

Kilmichael 1837
The Lewis Topographical Dictionary of 1837 gives an account of the parish of Kilmichael. The population was given as six thousand, six hundred and sixty six inhabitants. The principal landlords were J. Barter Cooldaniel, E. Barrett Carrigboy and B. Sweete Greenville. Sweete’s estate was said to contain lakes with great numbers of swans and waterfowl. There was also a rath (ring fort) on the lands in which copper coins were found. The house had been attacked by the Whiteboys in 1822.
The Protestant Church was a small ancient building. There was a parochial (Church of Ireland) school in which twenty children were being educated. There were four private schools attended by one hundred and forty children. These would have been the hedge schools which preceded the national schools. There was no mention of Toames National School opened in 1833 because for the purpose of this dictionary the area known as Macloneigh was a separate parish. Kilmichael Historical Society.

Toames 1774

Smith’s History of Cork provides a good description of the Gearagh and Annahala durung the late 1700s. “The river has its course here and for a considerable way below, interrupted with islands and deep boggy tract, until it runs to the bridge of Balynacassen. These islands are covered mostly with oak, ash, hazel and birch; at the feet of which grow fern, pollypodium and water dropwort. Here are great quantities of several kinds of waterfowl in their seasons, as bitterns, cranes, duck and mallard, teal etc. These bogs have been attempted to be drained, but it was found impracticable. In one called Anaghaly is about three acres of ground, on which is excellent limestone, that supplies the town of Macrromp, the western inhabitants of this barony and Carbery with lime for manure and building.” Kilmichael Historical Society

Pope Francis has announced an important lenten initiative in relation to the Sacrament of Confession. The Holy Father has asked that a church in each Diocese throughout the world would be designated for Continuous Confessions from Friday evening , March 28th to Saturday evening, March 29th, the eve of Laetare Sunday. Pope Francis has continually emphasised the importance of the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the context of New Evangelisation and in the context for the need for the Priest to be merciful to those who come. He has also stressed the need for frequent confession. In that regard, Pope Francis himself will hear Confessions in St. Peter's in Rome. Confession is an important part of the Lenten observance and is a Sacrament of welcome and mercy for the penitent. In the Diocese of Cork and Ross, St. Francis Church in Liberty Street has been designated for this purpose and priests from many religious orders and the Diocese will be available throughout the day and night to hear confessions there. It is a church in the city associated with confession and I appreciate the assistance of the Franciscan Community in this regard. Bishop Buckley said that confession of ones sins and a return to the Gospel has always been an important part of the Church's lenten observance. He commend this initiative wholeheartedly and will hear confessions himself in St. Francis' at that time.

Home Share is an initiative that provides short breaks for children and adults who attend COPE Foundation. Home Sharers are recruited from the community and the respite care/short break is provided in the sharer’s home.
These short breaks can be for a couple of hours, overnights, week-ends or even longer. Many families take great joy in caring for their loved ones, however providing this care on an ongoing basis can be extremely tiring and stressful. Having a short break from this care giving can be of huge benefit to the care giver, their family and the person being cared for. Home sharers can be working, retired, or unemployed with or without children, single or with a partner.
Training, support and an allowance will be provided to Home Sharers.
Interested?
If you would like more information or if you are interested in becoming a Home Sharer please ring Philip Grant on 021 4643238 or e-mail grantp@cope-foundation.ie

Terelton Cemetery
Dear Parishioners,
As most of you know, much work has gone into the tidying of Terelton Cemetery by the committee and the placer looks and feels all the better for it. More need to be done with plans to plant beech hedging and some daffodil bulbs and other flowers in the Autumn. Sadly, one issue continues to cause upset, that is the dumping of rubbish in the cemetery. We, the cemetery committee, encourage everyone to take their rubbish home and signs are going up to encourage people using the cemetery to do so. If the practice of leaving rubbish behind other peoples headstones and other places continues, we will have to do something about it. Terelton cemetery is a place of eternal rest for our loved ones.
It is also a place of prayer and rememberance. Please help keep it that way. Terelton Cemetery Committee

Mass at Cooldaniel Wedge Tomb
Mass at Cooldaniel Wedge Tomb, Sunday 14th September at 3 pm

Hi all,
Its all systems go for the Mass at Cooldaniel Wedge Tomb. I have asked the GAA to help out with marshalling and parking. We will need a bit of help with catering on site as a cup of tea will be served after Mass. Weather permitting, the site itself can be got to most of the way by car and the remainder will have to be accessed by foot. Good footwear will be essential. A few of us will gather at 11 am on Saturday morning on site to clear the way to the Tomb. I would like to go ahead regardless of weather. If it is too wet to say the Mass we could still manage to say a few prayers on site and plan another Mass at another time (that is plan B). I look forward to seeing you all there. Thanking you. Fr. Pat.
PS: Directions
The site is on Phil O’Grady’s farm at Cooldaniel. You access Phil’s farm from the main road, go up the lane and you will be directed to car parking and the Mass rock. I want to thank Phil for accommodating us and those that use her land for their co-operation. Fr. Pat.

Cooldaniel
This tomb here is a megalithic tomb – meaning large stone tomb. It falls into the category of wedge tomb. Wedge tombs have been dated to 3,000 to 1,500 BC and are most likely the oldest type of archaeological remains in this area. Kilmichael is lucky in that it has many wedge tombs remaining – including ones at Inchinacurka, Cooldorrihy, Knockane, Clashbredane, Slieveowen, Johnstown and Mamuckey. The design tended to be the same in all of them – a long narrow burial gallery which is generally broader and higher at the entrance and tapers towards the rear. The entrance tends to face in a south westerly direction. The remains of the dead, usually cremated, were placed in the chamber, often accompanied by grave goods such as pottery, ornaments and stone implements. It was fitting that this wedge tomb was used as a mass rock given its panoramic location. Mass rocks were used during the eighteenth century when the practice of the Catholic mass became a matter of difficulty and danger. Isolated sites like this would have been ideal as look outs could spot danger coming from a long way off and the existing stone tomb would have made things easier. We do know that a Fr. Denis O’Leary practised in Kilmichael and the chances are he said mass here. As the 18th century progressed the mass rocks tended to be abandoned in favour of mass houses. We knoe one existed in Cooldorrihy.
However, we know that the religious tradition in Cooldaniel extended back much further. The Holy Well (St. Michael’s) went back for hundreds of years and was the focus of rounds which also took in the cemetery at Moneycusker. In fact a pathway linked both locations. Hundreds gathered on the day from miles around. The Rounds took place on the feast of Michaelmas 29th September which was a holiday in Kilmichaell. After the rounds people adjourned to Cooldorrihy where the celebrations continued in a field adjacent to the church in Cooldorrihy.

The envelope boxes are currently available in the churches for collection. Sincere thanks to all who contribute to the parish through this system. We have updated the envelopes as not all families use them. If anyone wants to join the system, spare boxes are available by contacting myself or Eileen. If you have young family that are now ‘earning’ they should be asked to contribute however small the amount. I did it years ago myself and still do. Kindest regards, Fr. Pat.

Short but Sweet
Have you heard the story about two middle aged women who were out on a Christmas shopping spree. They had purchased many gifts and they had dozens of packages stuffed into the boot of the car. As they were driving home they passed a local church where the caretaker was assembling the illuminated crib on the front lawn and putting up other decorations. The church sign invited the community to the annual Christmas Eve service. One of the women said to the other “Why does the church take over everything. Look at that church trying to muscle in on Christmas”
